This unique two-part PD Resource Kit takes participants inside several kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms to observe master teacher Jaime Bailey and other experienced, innovative teachers working with young writers using a six trait model.

Participants will observe guided writing, practice activities, mini-lessons, independent writing time, and writing conferences specially designed to move young students forward as authors.

Part I: Launching Students as Writers

This PD Resource Kit focuses on instructional strategies ideally suited to the very beginning of the school year. Emphasis is placed on the three foundational traits: ideas, organization and conventions.

Learn how to:

  • help students generate a wealth of writing ideas and record them in age‑appropriate ways
  • teach students how to enrich their drawing and their writing with greater detail
  • guide students’ use of effective organization strategies for narrative and expository writing
  • begin demonstrating and expecting correct conventions within the context of writing

Part II: Extending Students' Writing Skills

In this PD Resource Kit, viewers will see teachers supporting students’ ongoing writing growth with models, lessons and activities that develop and extend all six writing traits well beyond introductory levels.

Learn how to:

  • expand students' repertoire of organizational frameworks
  • help students enliven their writing with vivid and interesting words
  • involve even reluctant writers with prompts designed to maximize voice
  • create editing tasks that enhance correctness
  • introduce students to the trait of fluency and guide their early experiences with this aspect of writing
